Delayed replication

Due to an internal network issue, new or modified DNS records are currently not being replicated within our network. DNS resolution is not impacted, but frontend machines are serving DNS data from 6:15pm UTC.

This is an internal issue; no attack has occurred. The issue is expected to be resolved around 8pm UTC today.

Update (7:48pm UTC): The issue has been resolved.

Ongoing performance issues

Since January 20, 2023, our DNS platform service has repeatedly been targeted by DDoS attacks, due to which our servers did not manage to respond to all requests. Attacks usually take around 15 minutes, during which our infrastructure is hit with around 120,000 queries per second.

Over the next couple of days, we will upgrade our infrastructure to handle the increased load spikes. We apologize for any intermittent issues clients may be experiencing until the upgrade is completed. Thank you for your patience!

(Is there any good in it? -- If you will, yes: being targeted for DDoS speaks to the maturity of the platform. It is true for all DNS providers that the day of DoS arrives eventually. We'll do out best to grow beyond it.)

  • We have not experienced any issues for several weeks now.

    DNS Anycast Frontends DDoS attack

DNS frontends are currently experiencing extraordinary load due to an ongoing DDoS attack. We will update this notice once the problem has been resolved.

As this is not the first incident, we will deploy more resources throughout the upcoming weeks, leading to a significant increase of the number of global server locations and their capabilities to cope with high load. We hope that this will prevent further attacks from succeeding.

  • It appears that the attack has subsided. We will continue watching the situation.

The attack exceeded about 120,000 DNS queries per second for about 15 minutes. When such load hits our infrastructure, there is not much we can do, except upgrading the infrastructure to cope with the situation.

We are planning to make a significant work and financial effort to do so in the upcoming weeks. -- To achieve this goal, we depend on community donations. If you like our service, please consider making a contribution! You can find more information here: https://desec.io/donate
